Local residents especially in the Clifton Drive, Highbury Road and the Promenade areas have been complaining about the problems of wind-blown sand and the council's level of response in dealing with the matter. Gales in recent months have made matters worse and whilst some residents have tried to return the sand to the beach that have been told that they could face legal action if they continue to do so. The dunes need to be stabilised so that the problem can be reduced. In the past special grasses have been planted to anchor the sand but there is little evidence to show whether anything is being done at present. (continued........
Affected residents are also calling on the council to take action to remove sand dumped in a local car park which is making the problem even worse. Recent TV and press coverage has now brought matters to a head and the problems now seem to be being taken more seriously. Just clearing the sand away however is not the solution.
Liberal Democrat councillors and campaigners are calling for Fylde Borough Council to produce a workable and sustainable plan for the area with resources to match in order to successfully manage the dunes and the beach amenities. Campaigner Tony Ford has been in touch with local residents and is lobbying local councillors for action.
