Labour crashed to a landslide council by-election defeat on one of the largest swings since it came to power, in voters' first verdict after Chancellor Gordon Brown's Budget. There was a 43.9% switch to Liberal Democrat Jason Zadrozny in a Nottinghamshire County contest at Sutton-in-Ashfield North. He polled nearly three quarters of the vote in what had been a traditional Labour stronghold, in a former coalfield area. In yesterday's only other by-election the Lib Dems held off the Tory threat to win in Elmbridge, Surrey.
This is a massive thumbs down to the Chancellor. It suggests that voters are not impressed by Gordon Brown's Budget. The Liberal Democrats are clearly the alternative in much of the country.
