Proposals have been submitted to Fylde Borough Council for a variety of beach sporting events such as power boarding, kite buggies and sand yachting. Working alongside representative groups, Cllr. Howard Henshaw has, for a long time been campaigning for the return of these activities provided that they are safe and well managed.Sand yachting was a regular a colourful feature of St Anne's beaches for many years until a tragic accident several years ago. The area was highly regarded as a sand yachting centre and several international competitors used the facilities.
One down-side to the proposal is that the Tory-controlled council is set to sell off the very car park used by many of the beach sportsmen/women and the sport's numerous spectators. Libdems and opposition groups on the council are still fighting the sell-off of this land.
Car Park 'up for sale'
Obviously FBC will scrutinise the proposals thoroughly to ensure the future safety of all beach users. Residents say that provided safety matters are adequately addressed they would welcome back sand yachting. Fylde Libdems welcome the return of these sporting activities which bring visitors to the town and enhance the area's reputation as a place for fun and recreation.
