Yesterday (23rd July) was a busy day for elections. Liberal Democrat, Eric Howden, won the Dormanstown Ward of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council from Labour. The Conservatives came fourth. We held the seat at Wembley Central with a majority of 261 over Labour and almost three times the Conservative vote. We gained a seat from the Conservatives on Huntingdon Town Council. Elsewhere the results were a mixed bag of generally bad news for the Conservatives. They lost a seat in Brighton & Hove to the Green's; and a seat to UKIP in both Huntingdonshire CC and Cambridgeshire CC but held on in Wellingborough. Labour held on in Reddish North.
In the Norwich North Parliamentary by-election it was nice to see the 'Honest' candidate beat the BNP. The Tories will hail it as a triumph. They threw all they had at it. But with 12 candidates [only 6 in 2005]; turnout down by about 13%; and the winner down some 2000 votes on the Tory 2nd place in 2005, it is not clear what anybody can really read into this except 'anyone but Labour'.
