At his news conference today(27th) a reporter from the Daily Mirror asked David Cameron if he could confirm whether Lord Ashcroft paid UK taxes. Cameron gave the quite correct answer that he always gives, saying that this was a matter between Lord Ashcroft & the Inland Revenue. But this question keeps getting asked because Lord Ashcroft is a huge benefactor to, and a big influence within, the Conservative Party. Both he & Cameron must surely know that in political terms the absence of an answer that recognises the politics is very damaging to the image of the Conservatives that Cameron is trying to build. Lord Ashcroft may well pay proper taxes so why be so coy about it?
