Gordon Brown missed a big opportunity to repair our broken democracy. In the Queen's speech there was no mention of electoral reform yet there is an urgent need to increase the debate on methods of voting. The 'first past the post system' is unrepresentative of the majority of voters, leaving many disenfranchised. Liberal Democrats have campaigned long and hard for electoral reform and will continue to do so.
Gordon Brown has promised a referendum on this matter if he wins the next election, which is unlikely. However he could make sure that we get this referendum in the next Parliament, by passing legislation that binds the next Parliament to reform. It's in his power but will he use it ?
