There were ten principal by-elections held on 10th December. Liberal Democrats had two spectacular results. Ashay Ghai took Bearsden South Ward of East Dumbartonshire Unitary Authority away from the Conservatives. Bearsden is one of the most upmarket suburbs of Glasgow. LibDem Kirstie Clish-Green defeated the Conservatives in the Tavistok S. Ward of West Devon Borough Council with 45.8% of the vote. In the Kingsbrook Ward of Bedford BC LibDem Andrew Gerard successfully defended the seat.
Elsewhere Labour gained from the BNP in Nuneaton & Bedworth; from Conservatives in Wyre Forest and Weymouth & Portland; held their own in Westminster and narrowly defeated the LibDems in Rushmoor. The Conservatives hung on in Peterborough & Hastings.
