After at least three decades of domineering, authoritarian government driven by ideologies which basically seek to impose a blanket ban on any activity that is disapproved of or 'vote catching' or 'media placating' it is perhaps worth recalling a definition of Liberalism: ' A political theory founded on the natural goodness of humans, the autonomy of the individual and favouring civil and political liberties; government by law with the consent of the governed and protection from arbitrary authority'. It is worth keeping this in mind when we judge Coalition policies, especially perhaps those most Liberal Democrats don't like. Academies & 'Free Schools' are a case in point. It is not 'liberal' to disallow them. We can just rejoice that out of the tens of thousands of schools in the country as of 1st August only 62 applications for 'Free Schools' and 153 for new Academies had been received.
