October 1st elections - A good day for Liberal Democrats

6.29.03am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 5th Oct 2009

Nineteen yr old local, Ben McGilvray, a 2nd year History student at York University won the Wroxham Ward by election of Broadlands District Council. He increased the LibDem vote by a stunning 58% & his victory makes him the youngest Liberal Democrat Councillor on a principal council. Walsingham Ward (of pilgrimage fame) of North Norfolk District Council falls within Norman Lamb's parliamentary constituency. In May we won the County seat and our campaign built on this to produce a 32% increase in the vote. Lib Dems third gain of the day was in the Droitwich South West Ward of Wychavon District Council. We held our seat on the Fant Ward of Maidstone Borough Council. Liberal Democrats have made 15 net gains in by-elections so far this year. The Tories have a net loss of 18!
